PlayStation’s latest State of Play promised “a ton of games” and delivered on that front—if you’re a fan of third-party titles. From the long-awaited reveal of Borderlands 4 to fresh looks at Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, and even a new Dynasty Warriors spin-off that shadow-dropped today, there was no shortage of content. But when it comes to PlayStation Studios, the showcase left a lot to be desired.
Let’s start with the biggest first-party announcement: Saros, Housemarque’s follow-up to Returnal. The game looks intriguing, but the problem? It’s not launching until next year. That means Sony’s biggest new first-party game shown isn’t even a 2024 release. Then, there’s Days Gone Remastered, a visually upgraded version of Bend Studio’s 2019 open-world zombie game. While the original has its fanbase, a remaster wasn’t exactly high on many wish lists—especially when rumors of a sequel were floating around in the past.
And that’s… it. Just two PlayStation Studios games in a showcase that was otherwise filled with third-party content. Don’t get me wrong—many of the reveals were exciting. The Shinobi reboot? Looks fantastic. WWE 2K25: The Island? A fun surprise. But for a brand that built its reputation on first-party dominance, this State of Play felt lackluster.
It’s clear that Sony is leaning heavily on third-party support right now, and while that’s not necessarily a bad thing, it raises the question—where are the PlayStation Studios heavy hitters? With Marvel’s Wolverine still a ways off and no sign of major franchises like Ghost of Tsushima or The Last of Us, PlayStation’s 2024 first-party lineup is looking thin.
